Case Studies Of Projects Utilising GBIS Funding
Case Study – GBIS & DSP Funded Mid-terrace Duo
Project Details
The Build-up
These two mid-terraced houses recently benefited from GBIS funding to install external wall insulation, significantly enhancing their thermal efficiency. These homes utilised an innovative EWI Pro system known as DuraShield Pro (DSP), which uplifted their initial funding of £5000 by an additional £2000. DSP holds an Ofgem Innovation Link which entitles the claimants to an uplift to funding of up to 45%. Due to the enhanced durability, the system is also eligible for 60-year warranties.
The project incorporated an EPS system, meticulously designed by EWI Pro. The EPS system used in this project followed a detailed installation process to ensure optimal performance. First, the exterior walls are cleaned and prepped, using EWI-310 Universal Primer, to provide a suitable surface for the insulation. Next, EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) boards were cut to size and securely fixed to the walls using a combination of EPS adhesive and plastic mechanical fixings. Once the boards were in place, they were reinforced with a basecoat layer and embedded fibreglass mesh to enhance durability and prevent cracking. This is followed by the application of a second basecoat layer, which creates a smooth and robust surface. A secondary layer of mesh is embedded following the basecoat layer, as per the DSP system design. Finally, a silicone render finish was applied, not only enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the buildings but also providing an additional layer of weather resistance. Each step is crucial for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the insulation system.
This comprehensive approach not only ensured a seamless installation process but also maximised the energy-saving potential of the insulation, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective living environment for the residents.

The Build-up
This semi-detached house recently utilised £4800 in GBIS funding to install external wall insulation, significantly enhancing the thermal efficiency and comfort of the home. The substrate for this project was existing brick.
The project featured an EPS system designed by EWI Pro and installed by Smith Plastering through a comprehensive process to guarantee top performance. Firstly, the walls were primed with EWI-310 Universal Primer to create a good key for the insulation. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) boards were then cut to size and firmly anchored to the walls using a mix of EWI-225 Premium Basecoat and plastic mechanical fixings. After adhering the boards, a reinforcement layer was added using EWI-225 Premium Basecoat and embedded fibreglass mesh to boost durability and prevent cracks. Another basecoat layer was then applied, resulting in a smooth and solid surface. To finish, EWI-076 Premium Bio Silicone Render was used to not only improve the building’s appearance but also provide extra protection against the elements and vegetation growth. Every stage was essential to ensure the insulation system’s durability and effectiveness.
This thorough approach ensured a smooth installation process and maximised the insulation’s energy-saving potential, leading to a more sustainable and cost-effective living environment for the residents.
